02 | GUIDELINES FOR HOST FAMILIES
INTRODUCTION
Firstly, thank you. You have chosen to become a host – we sincerely hope that this will be long term and an enjoyable time for both yourself and your guest.
You will generally be looking after a child
/ student who will be attending a boarding school in the UK and whose parents are based abroad. It may just be for a leave out weekend, a half term holiday week or in some cases for a longer period of time. Whatever the duration of stay, it is really important that you welcome the child into your home and make them feel part of your family. They want to feel that they have a have a home from home in a happy, caring and safe environment.
Many host families enjoy watching the children / students that they care for grow into young adults, often attending university graduation ceremonies and weddings in the years ahead.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HOST FAMILY
You have chosen to be a host family and it is important that you understand your responsibilities in this role.
Whilst a child / student is in your care you have full responsibility for their wellbeing and safety. You must take day to day responsibility for the child / student and care for them as a responsible caring parent would.
If you are hosting children / students from other organisations at the same time that you are hosting for College Guardians please let us know.
It is not permitted to take paying guests at the same time as hosting for College Guardians unless prior arrangements have been made.
It is important to point out that College Guardians is the “educational guardian” to the student or child, therefore the overall responsibility lies with us.
