8. MUSICAL STATUES (with egg shakers): ‘Doowit’ performed by Pharrell Williams
a) Ask the children if they know the game Musical Statues. Tell them that they’re going to play a game a
little bit like Musical Statues and that if they can beat you to win, you will give them all a Haribo treat.
b) Explain that they are going to be minions and you are going to give each of them a shaker filled with jelly
(egg shaker).
c) When the music plays they must march their jelly shakers to Gru’s house (demonstrate walking and shaking
a shaker as you tell them). When the music stops it means that a baddie is coming! The children must freeze, hide their jelly shakers behind their backs and be really still and quiet (demonstrate freezing) so the baddie doesn't steal their jelly shakers. “If everyone is really quiet and still when the music stops, you will all win a Haribo treat.”
d) “I am going to turn into the baddie every time the music stops.”
e) Give each child a jelly shaker.
f) Play ‘Doowit’ and the children march around the room and shake their jelly shakers. Pause the music and
pretend to be the baddie. The children freeze. You get grumpy because they’ve managed to escape you.
“I’ll get you next time!” Try to be as silly as you can to make the children laugh.
g) Repeat several times until you confess that the minions have beaten you and delivered their jelly shakers
to Gru’s house. You cry and say “I want my mummy!”
h) Walk away and when you turn back you are no longer the baddie. Tell the children that you’ve turned
back into Minion Sparkles, congratulate them and tell them you will give them their Haribo prize before you go home.
9. ACTION SONG OR POEM: ‘Sleeping Minions’ (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Sleeping Bunnies’) “Who knows the sleeping bunnies song (the children will already know the song and how to play the game)? Well I’m going to teach you how minions play ‘Sleeping Bunnies’. We’re all going to be minions and go to sleep and when we wake up, we are going to dance all around the room.”
Verse:
See the minions sleeping, (the children lie down, pretending to sleep) Till it's nearly noon.
Shall we wake them,
With a merry tune?
They’re so still.
Are they ill? "Wake up minions!” (the children wake up)
Chorus:
Dance little minions, dance, dance, dance, (everyone dances) Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance,
Dance little minions, dance, dance, dance,
Dance, dance, dance. X 2
“Back to sleep, back to sleep! Now put your hand up if you can think of another ‘despicable creature’ that we can pretend to be? We can be ghosts, frogs, monsters, snakes or any other ‘despicable creature’ you can think of!” Make sure to choose the birthday child if they volunteer. Take the chosen child’s idea (e.g. frogs) and alter the lyrics to create a new verse.
Verse:
See the frogs sleeping, (the children lie down, pretending to sleep) Till it's nearly noon.
Shall we wake them,
With a merry tune?
They’re so still.
Are they ill? "Wake up little frogs!” (the children wake up)
Chorus:
Jump little frogs, jump, jump, jump, (everyone jumps) Jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump.
Jump little frogs, jump, jump, jump,
Jump, jump, jump. X 2
Repeat the process another two or three times.
If you need to join in with the actions to encourage them then please do so. Otherwise, you should clap along as you sing the chorus to help maintain energy.
