Resources for Spring Music Lesson Thirteen Activity: Penny on the Water
In the Nursery:
1. Babies bounce gently on an adults' lap to the pulse and are lifted up high at the end as you say 'Whee!'
2. Everyone sits around the parachute in a circle. Move the parachute from side to side to the pulse for the song and then lift it up high at the end as you say 'Whee!' Repeat again with a soft fish toy (or any other small soft toy) on top, flinging it high into the air as you say 'Whee!' Tell the babies that the fish is going to swim slowly and repeat the activity at a slower tempo. Tell the babies that the fish is going to swim quickly and repeat the activity at a faster tempo.
3. The adults sit around the parachute, holding onto its edges and moving it from side to side to the pulse, whilst the babies hide underneath. Younger babies can lie underneath and at the edges of the parachute (close to an adult) and look up at the parachute and bigger babies can sit underneath. The parachute is lifted up and the babies are revealed on the 'Whee!' Alternatively, the babies can take turns hiding underneath (one at a time) and you can substitute 'Penny' with the name of the baby who is hiding.
At Home:
1. Gently bounce your baby on your lap to the pulse and lift them up high at the end as you say 'Whee!'
2. Sit facing your baby. Move a scarf (or other piece of material) side to side to the pulse as you sing the song and then lift it up high on the ‘Whee!’ Some babies will like it if the scarf falls over their head (so it’s almost like a peek-a-boo when you lift up the scarf at the end). Tell your baby that the fish is going to swim slowly and repeat the activity at a slower tempo. Tell your baby that the fish is going to swim quickly and repeat the activity at a faster tempo.
NB: if your baby is not yet sitting, lie them on their back so they can look up at you and the piece of material as you move it side to side to the pulse and then up high at the end.
