Summer Dance Lesson 8: Nursery Rhymes
Activity: ‘See Saw Margery Daw’ (traditional)
1. “It’s time for us to make baby see saws, medium sized see saws and a giant see saw. First we’re going to make baby see saws.” The children stand up, hold their arms out straight to the sides and rock from side to side as you all sing the song. Repeat two or three times.
2. “Now it’s time to make medium sized see saws.” The children get into pairs and perform the same action only this time they are holding hands (arms still out to the sides) and rocking side to side in time with each other as you all sing the song. Repeat two or three times.
3. “Now it’s time for us to make a giant see saw!” The children sit around the parachute, holding onto its edges. They lift it up and down to the pulse as you all sing the song. Ask an adult to hold the other side of the parachute so all the children can hide underneath it at once as you sing the song and move it up and down to the pulse.
Lyrics:
See Saw Margery Daw,
Johnny shall have a new master. He shall have but a penny a day, Because he can’t work any faster.
Adaptations for Social Distancing
If you need to limit physical contact and prop sharing due to social distancing, skip activity 2 and switch the parachute in activity 3 for scarves. E.g.
1. “It’s time for us to make baby see saws, medium sized see saws and giant see saws. First we’re going to make baby see saws.” The children sit with their arms straight out to the sides and rock from side to side (touching the floor with one hand at a time) as you all sing the song. Repeat two or three times.
2. “Now it’s time to make medium sized see saws.” The children stand up, hold their arms out straight to the sides and rock from side to side as you all sing the song. Repeat two or three times.
3. “Now it’s time for us to make giant see saws!” Hand each child a dancing scarf. They move it up and down according to pitch and pulse as they sing the song.
Other Ideas!
Ask the children to name some other nursery rhymes and then act them out one by one. E.g. for ‘Jack and Jill’ you can stretch up high for the first half and then roll around on the floor for the second half.
