Spring Mixed Age Music Lesson 12
P. 1

Resources for Spring Music Lesson Twelve Activity: Penny on the Water
In the Nursery:
1. Babies and toddlers bounce on adults' laps to the pulse and are lifted up at the end as you say 'Whee!' Pre-schoolers tap the floor to the pulse and jump up high as they say 'Whee!'
2. Everyone sits around the parachute in a circle. Move the parachute from side to side to the pulse for the song and then lift it up high at the end as you say 'Whee!' Repeat again with a soft fish toy (or any other small soft toy) on top, flinging it high into the air as you say 'Whee!' Tell the children that the fish is going to swim slowly and repeat the activity at a slower tempo. Tell the children that the fish is going to swim quickly and repeat the activity at a faster tempo.
3. The adults sit around the parachute, holding onto its edges and moving it from side to side to the pulse, whilst the children hide underneath. The parachute is lifted up and the children are revealed on the 'Whee!' Alternatively, the children can take turns hiding underneath (one at a time) and you can substitute 'Penny' with the name of the child who is hiding.
At Home:
1. Babies and toddlers bounce on adults' laps to the pulse and are lifted up at the end as you say 'Whee!' Pre-schoolers tap the floor to the pulse and jump up high as they say 'Whee!'
2. Babies and toddlers: sit facing your child. Move a scarf (or other piece of material) side to side to the pulse as you sing the song and then lift it up high on the ‘Whee!’ Some children will like it if the material falls over their head (so it’s almost like a peek-a-boo when you lift up the scarf at the end). Tell your child that the fish is going to swim slowly and repeat the activity at a slower tempo. Tell your child that the fish is going to swim quickly and repeat the activity at a faster tempo.
Pre-schoolers: you hold two corners of a scarf (or other piece of material) and your child holds the other two corners, so it is horizontal and flat. Move the piece of material from side to side to the pulse for the song and then lift it up high at the end as you say 'Whee!' Next, place a small soft toy on top of the piece of material and repeat the song, flinging the toy high up into the air as you say ‘Whee!’ Tell your child that the fish is going to swim slowly and repeat the activity at a slower tempo. Tell your child that the fish is going to swim quickly and repeat the activity at a faster tempo.
Lyrics:
Penny on the water, Penny on the sea.
Up jumps a little fish, And up jumps me! Whee!
