“Hedgehogs are nocturnal which means they go to sleep in the day time and wake up at night time!” Perform the activity as in the video. Below is a summary:
a) The hedgehogs are asleep (sitting with head tucked into knees, arms wrapped around legs and toes pointed).
b) “Alrighthedgehogs, thesunisgoingdownsoit’stimetowakeup!”Theygradually straighten their legs and open their arms out to the side as they wake up (over about 4 counts). Encourage the children to push their knees down to touch the floor.
c) Say “hedgehog spikes” and everyone spreads their fingers wide.
d) Say, “Oh no, there’s an owl. Ahh!” Everyone quickly curls back up to a sleeping
position to hide. The children join in with the “Ahh!”.
e) Whilehiding,askavolunteertodecidewhichanimaltheyshouldhidefromnext.
f) Repeat the activity replacing the owl with the chosen animal.
g) Repeat one more time taking a suggestion from another volunteer.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
3. Introduce the theme: ‘Let’s Make a Circle’ written by Anne Porter Without speaking, get the children into a circle by singing acapella:
Let’s make a circle, A circle, a circle. Let’s make a circle, Here today.
Repeat until everyone is in a circle and then encourage the children to sit down. Please use this song every time you need the children in a circle throughout the lesson.
“Which season are we in now?” If no children answer ask, “Are we in summer, autumn, winter or spring?” Ask volunteers to tell you what happens in the summer (e.g. it starts to get warmer, the sun shines for longer making the days longer, some of us are lucky enough to go on holidays, we eat ice cream, we go to the beach etc.). Lead the group in quickly acting out each suggestion whilst sitting.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
