Lesson plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
See weekly drama activity break down for video and instructions. Make sure to use lots of energy!
* Running time approx. 1 min 45 secs.
2. Focus activity: ‘Yes We Can’ written by Unknown
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 3 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
3. Travel to Storyland
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the boat laminate. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “Who can tell me what’s in this picture?”
b) “What sound do boats make?” Ask a volunteer to demonstrate.
c) Everyone pretends to drive or row a boat and makes the sound together.
d) “Now we’re going to build our very own boat. First, we need to build the deck.” You
lead the children in hammering wood to make the deck. “What else do we need to make a boat?” Choose a volunteer to answer (e.g. sail, stern, steering wheel, seats, lifeboats etc.). You act out building the suggested feature (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using ideas from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’ (traditional)
The children sit facing a partner and hold their hands. You ask a volunteer to be your special partner and you sing the whole song twice while demonstrating the actions (rowing action back and forth), encouraging everyone to join in and follow you.
Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, Life is but a dream.
Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream.
If you see a crocodile,
Don’t forget to scream. Ahh!
(softly) Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the creek.
If you see a little mouse,
Don’t forget to squeak.
Squeak, squeak, squeak!
(loudly) Row, row, row your boat, Gently to the shore.
If you see a lion,
Don’t forget to roar. Roar!
