Lesson plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
See weekly drama activity break down for video and instructions. Make sure to use lots of energy!
* Running time approx. 1 min 45 secs.
2. Focus activity: Name Game
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 3 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
3. Travel to Storyland
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the big blue truck laminate. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “What is in this picture?”
b) “What colour is my truck?”
c) “What are trucks used for?” Ask a volunteer with their hand up to answer. If they
don’t mention delivering things (e.g. packages, shopping, cars, horses, kit homes
etc.) then you can suggest it for them.
d) Everyone makes the sound of truck horn together. “Trucks are a form of transport
that move on the ground. There are other types too, like cars. Everybody make the sound of a little car horn. And trains are another type of transport that move on the ground. Everybody make the sound of a train horn.”
e) Ask a volunteer to name another form of transport that moves on the ground. You may need to give some suggestions to choose from (e.g. car, bus, taxi, bicycle, motorcycle, scooter etc.). You act out driving or riding the suggested mode of transport (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using ideas from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘A Big Red Bus’ (tune of the popular Moroccan children’s song ‘A Ram Sam Sam’, second verse written by Lucy Milan Davis and Lily Newbury-Freeman)
Sing the song two to three times acapella and perform the actions as instructed below. Encourage the children to join in with the singing and the actions. The lyrics are very repetitive so it should be easy for them to join in.
