Horse and Buggy performed by BBC concert Orchestra & Leonard Slatkin
Activities for public classes with parents/carers
1. Hand each baby some “reins” (a coloured scarf). Babies are bounced on an adult's knee as though they are riding in the buggy. The adults should slow down during the middle section as the horse gets tired (tempo slows) and they speed up as the horse trots home hurriedly at the end (tempo speeds up again).
Activities for ELCs and pre-schools
1. Tell the babies that today they will be listening to a song about a horse and buggy and that today they are going to take the teddy for a ride in the buggy. The parachute becomes the buggy. Place your small teddy on top. The adults and older babies hold onto the parachute and bounce up and down as they move it up and down to the pulse. The buggy should slow down during the middle section as the horse gets tired (tempo slows) and they speed up as the horse trots home hurriedly at the end (tempo speeds up again).
Same as pre-schoolers activity one only
    1. Everyone puts on their “listening ears” and their “quiet lips”. Explain to the children that today they will be listening to a song about a horse and buggy and that they are going to go for a ride in the buggy. Play the track through your speakers and hand each child some “reins” (a coloured scarf). The children hold their reins and bounce up and down to the pulse. Ask them to listen out for the sound of the horses' hooves and the crack of the driver's whip. The children should slow down during the middle section as the horse gets tired (tempo slows) and they speed up as the horse trots home hurriedly at the end (tempo speeds up again). Towards the end of the track the children place their scarves over their heads for the next activity.
2. Tell the children that today they will become the horses. Play the track through your speakers and hand each child a “tail” (a coloured scarf). The children gallop around the room like horses, adjusting their speed according to the track as before. Towards the end of the track the children place their scarves over their heads for the next activity.
