ask them to hold the opposite end of the parachute and encourage the children to all go under together as you sing the song one final time.
Emma is hiding, is hiding, is hiding. Emma is hiding. Where could she be? Peek-a-boo! I see you!
Peek-a-boo! I see you!
NB: If there are only a few children and there is plenty of time, the children can go underneath individually (rather than in groups) so as to be ‘Emma’ by themselves.
10. CHASING GAME: ‘Catch the Ballet Students!’ (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Tiny Tim’)
Put on your posh ballet teacher voice. “And now I’m going to teach you how to become real ballerinas, just like Emma! I am the ballet teacher and you are my students. Follow me.” Sing the song acapella and perform the actions as indicated by the lyrics.
“Every ballerina must know how to spin around.”
The ballerinas are spinning, the ballerinas are spinning, the ballerinas are spinning in the ballet class.
“Every ballerina must know how to point their toes.”
The ballerinas are pointing...
“And of course, every ballerina must be very good at jumping!”
The ballerinas are jumping...
“Now I’m going to chase you and see how many students I can catch!” Chase the children as you sing the final verse. The ballet teacher’s chasing...
Ask the birthday boy/girl if they would like to be the next ballet teacher. If they say no, choose someone with their hand up who managed to escape you. Remind the next ballet teacher that when you sing “The ballet teacher’s chasing” they must catch as many students as possible. Repeat and then choose a child who “managed to escape” to be the next ballet teacher (otherwise they’ll all just be caught on purpose). Repeat as many times as necessary (for example if there is no pass the parcel and/or not many children you may get through the activities quickly and so extend this one, or if you are running behind you could perform the activity just two or three times).
11. PASS THE PARCEL: ‘Hot Potato’ performed by The Wiggles (if requested)
See the Sparkles Resources page on our website for instructions on how to play our version of Pass the Parcel.
12. ACTIONGAME:‘TheWiggles’
Emma wiggle = make bow shape on head with arms and sing “Emma’s yellow bow” as in the first choreographed dance
Captain Feathersword = hook arm and say “Arghhh!”
Wags the Dog = use hands to make dog ears on head and say “woof”
Simon Wiggle = hands to side of your mouth as though shouting as you sing, “La, la, la, la, la.” (as in the ‘Rockabye Your Bear’ actions song)
Ballet friends = find a friend, hold hands, spin around and say “Whee!”
a) “To be like Emma Wiggle you have to be very clever so now we’re going to play a game to see how strong and clever your brains are today. Every time I say ‘Emma Wiggle’ you have to remember to sing “Emma’s yellow bow’.” Demonstrate the action listed above as you sing the words. Then, you say “Emma Wiggle” and the children make a bow shape as they sing “Emma’s yellow bow”. Practise several times.
b) One by one add in the rest of the Wiggles characters listed above. Make sure to mix up the order in which you are saying the character names as you teach the game.
c) At first, do all the actions and sounds/words with the children.
d) When they have got the hang of it, you tell them you are now watching to see if they can be really clever
and remember all of the sounds and actions without your help.
e) Lots of energy!
