Lesson plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
Play the track and perform actions as indicated by the lyrics. Make sure to use lots of energy!
* Running time approx. 1 min 45 secs.
2. Focus activity: Name Game
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 3 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
3. Travel to Storyland
See weekly drama activity break down for instructions.
* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the growing up laminate. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “What is happening in this picture?”
b) “When you grow up, you’ll be very tall and be able to reach up very high.” Everyone
stands up and stretches as high as they can.
c) With a low voice say “and your voice will become much lower. After three let’s all
say ‘hello I’m a grown up’ with a very low voice. One, two three, ‘hello I’m a grown up’. And again, One, two three, ‘hello I’m a grown up’. One more time. One, two three, ‘hello I’m a grown up!’”
d) “When you grow up you can have a job and go to work. You could be a teacher, a fire fighter, a police officer, a lawyer, a doctor or anything else that you’d like to be.” Ask a volunteer to tell you what they would like to be when they grow up. You act out doing the suggested occupation (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using an idea from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘This is the Way’ (sung to the traditional tune of ‘Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush’)
“Let’s pretend to be grown ups now!” Sing the whole song two times and perform actions as indicated by the lyrics. For “drive the car” you can either stand up and pretend to drive around the room in a circle, so everyone is going in the same direction, or pretend to drive seated. For “walk to work” you can either stand up and walk around the room in a circle so everyone is going in the same direction, or stamp your feet to the pulse whilst seated. Whether you choose to do these activities standing or seated will depend on the needs of the group. For “stay up late” do lots of stretching and yawning actions before lying down to go to sleep and snore. During the repeat of the song, you can replace some of the suggested verses with ideas from the children.
