Term One Lesson ten: Getting Ready for Bed

Getting Ready for Bed
Props Required
Music player, music speaker, sparkly magic bag, boy yawning in bed laminate and magic sparkles
Lesson plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles
Play the track and perform actions as indicated by the lyrics. Make sure to use lots of energy!
* Running time approx. 1 min 45 secs.
2. Focus activity: ‘Yes We Can’ written by Unknown

* Running time approx. 3 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
3. Travel to Storyland

* Running time approx. 4 mins (‘Let’s make a Circle’ should take a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds).
4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the picture of a boy yawning in bed. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “Whatisthelittleboydoinginthispicture?”
b) “What sound do you make when you yawn?” Everyone does a yawning action and
makes the sound.
c) Ask a volunteer to tell everyone something they do to get ready for bed. Give some
suggestions (e.g. have a bath, clean teeth, get into pyjamas, read a story etc.), if necessary. You act out performing the suggested activity (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using suggestions from three more volunteers.

5. Action song or poem: ‘Getting Ready for Bed’ by Lucy Milan Davis and Tamara Saffir
a) Say the rhyme, performing actions as indicated by the words.
b) Perform the rhyme again, encouraging the children to join in with the actions.
c) Perform the rhyme a third time, encouraging the children to join in with the words
AND the actions (repeat two lines at a time to help them learn it).
d) Lastly, perform the rhyme all together in full (saying the words and performing the
actions).
I wash my face, I comb my hair, I brush my teeth, I say a prayer.
I read my book,
Kiss teddy goodnight,
I close my eyes,
And then sleep tight. (pretend to go to sleep and start snoring)
