 Resources for Spring Drama Lesson Six Easter: Easter Activity: ‘Hot Cross Buns’ (traditional)
Make imaginary Hot Cross Buns with your child. Pour all of the ingredients (flour, sugar, salt, yeast, butter, egg, milk, sultanas and cinnamon) into a big bowl. Stir the ingredients to the pulse as you sing the first verse (using the tune of ‘Hot Cross Buns’.
Stir the dough,
Stir the dough.
One a penny, two a penny, Stir the dough.
Roll the dough into balls and place them on the baking tray. Sing the second verse as you draw crosses on the buns to the pulse.
Draw the crosses,
Draw the crosses.
One a penny, two a penny, Draw the crosses.
Act out putting the buns in the oven and then taking them out when ready. Ask your child to choose which spread to put on the buns. Spread the chosen condiment using your whole right hand (wiping it across the left hand with palm then back of hand to pulse) as you sing the third verse. Choose another spread and reapeat.
Spread the butter/jam/honey...
Sing the fourth verse twice, taking a bite of your bun during each “gap in the
song” (crotchet rest).
Hot cross buns (bite),
Hot cross buns (bite).
One a penny, two a penny, Hot cross buns (bite). (Spoken) Mmm. Delicious!
Other Ideas!
1. Encourage your child to host a tea party for all their favourite toys. You can act out giving the toys their invitations, setting the table, handing out Hot Cross Buns, pouring cups of tea, eating and drinking together and washing up at the end.
2. Sing the song as you make real Hot Cross Buns with your child.
