Resources for Spring Music Lesson Eleven Activity: Rig a Jig Jig
In the Nursery:
The children walk around the room in one direction to the pulse. After "meet" they quickly find a partner. Ask the staff to help you get the children into pairs if need be. Each pair holds hands and swings around for the chorus ("A rig a jig jig" etc.). When the chorus is finished the children let go of their partners and walk around the room to the pulse as individuals again and the song is repeated. Encourage the children to choose a different partner each time.
Alternatively, for younger groups, everyone sits in a circle and claps during the verse. For the chorus, choose two children to go in the middle and jump up and down whilst holding hands. For non-walkers, an adult takes one baby into the middle and gently bounces them up and down during the chorus.
At Home:
Tell your child that you will be the leader and walk around the room in one direction to the pulse. After "meet", face your child, hold both their hands and swing around in a circle. When the chorus is finished, ask your child if they would like to be the next leader. Repeat the process with your child leading the walking during the verse.
Alternatively, for non-walkers, pick them up and walk them around the room. Make sure to walk in time with the pulse. After “meet” stay where you are in the room and gently bounce your child up and down.
Lyrics:
Verse
As I was walking down the street, Down the street, down the street.
A friend of mine I chanced to meet. Hello, hello, hello!
Chorus
A rig a jig jig and away we go, Away we go, away we go.
A rig a jig jig and away we go. Hello, hello, hello.
Other Ideas!
In the Nursery and At Home:
1. Try different movements for the partner dancing. E.g. the pairs hold hands and jump up and down.
2. Try using a slower tempo, and later a faster tempo.
