P. 41
Repeat twice, stopping on the second heartbeat (saw), then on the first heartbeat (see) and then on the third heartbeat (up and).
Repeat with the second row of heartbeats (filling in the 8th then 5th then 6th then 7th hearts) until you have filled in all of the words. Everyone sings the song in their thinking voices as you tap the words in time with the rhythm. “What was I tapping in time with (the rhythm)?”
I’m going to draw a cross for every word. Ask the children to tell you which heartbeats have one word and draw a cross (x) under each of the words, inside the hearts. Then, add two crosses (one under each word) to the heartbeats that contain two words.
You sing out loud and tap the crosses in time with the rhythm whilst the children sing out loud and clap the rhythm. Remind the children to follow the crosses as they clap. Then, ask a volunteer to tap the crosses and sing whilst the rest of the class claps and sings.
Next, everyone sings in their thinking voices whilst you tap the crosses in time with the rhythm and the children clap the rhythm. Repeat several times. Ask a volunteer to sing the song in their thinking voice on their own as they tap the crosses in time with the rhythm.
Rub out words (so there are just the crosses in the hearts). “What do we call this picture (a rhythm picture)?”
Everyone sings in their thinking voices whilst you tap the crosses in time with the rhythm and the children clap the rhythm. Remind the children to follow the crosses as they clap. Repeat.
