Page 42 - Level 1 Ukulele Lesson Plans
P. 42

Remind the children how to hold their ukuleles. See activity 5 ‘Tuning’ from lesson plan 1 for instructions.
Ask a volunteer to sing ‘See Saw Up and Down’ as they pluck the rhythm on the G string (which was part of homework).
Then everyone sings the song and plucks the rhythm on the G string. This is the children’s third week performing this activity so you can speed it up a little as in the track. Repeat.
“Now we’re going to pluck the rhythm on the E string. Can everyone please find the E string.” If they aren’t sure you can get them to sing “GCEA Green Children Eat Ants” from ‘The Tuning Song’ to figure it out. “Which string number is the E string (2)?”
Lead the children in slowly singing ‘See Saw Up and Down’ as they pluck the E string in time with the rhythm. Repeat several times.
Next, everyone sings and you pluck the rhythm on the G string whilst the children pluck the rhythm on the E string. Switch so that you play the E string and the children play the G string.
Split the class in two and half pluck the G string whilst the other half pluck the E string (everyone should sing). Switch.
If there is time, ask two volunteers to perform together (with one singing and plucking the G string and the other singing and plucking the E string).
“For homework this week I’d like you to sing ‘See Saw’ and pluck the rhythm on the E string.”
8. Song/Game (5 mins): ‘Walkin’ in the Rain’ (traditional)
Click activity name to open YouTube video link.
You sing the song on your own and perform the following actions whilst the children sit and watch. Walk in time with the pulse, stop on the word “jump” and then jump and land on the word “splash”. See video.
Walkin' in the rain, walkin' in the rain, (walk in time with the pulse)
Look there's a puddle let's jump. Splash! (stop on ‘jump’ and jump on ‘splash’) Walkin' in the rain, walkin' in the rain, (walk in time with the pulse)
Look there's a puddle let's jump. Splash! (stop on ‘jump’ and jump on ‘splash’)
“What was I walking in time with (the pulse)?”
Next, you sing the song and the children perform the actions as demonstrated by you.
“This time, I want you to try and join in with as many words as you can remember.” Perform the song again and the children join in with as many words as they can remember. Repeat.
“We’re going to sing the song again but we’re going to sing and move slowly like snails.
“We’re going to sing the song again but we’re going to sing and move quickly like a really fast animal.” Choose a volunteer to name a really fast animal for everyone to move like.
