1. Tune the Children’s Ukuleles as they Arrive (5-10 mins MAX)
Please see instructions in lesson plan 1.
2. Welcome (5 mins): ‘Hello, Hello’ written by Janice Buckner Please see instructions in lesson plan 6.
‘Yes We Can’
Play the game and go through each of the voice types (speaking, singing, whispering, louder, higher, lower and thinking) at least twice. Make sure to mix up the order of the voice types each time.
Remember for thinking voice, you don’t say the words. Rather you tap the rhythm of “can you use your thinking voice” on your head and the children answer by tapping the rhythm of “yes we can, yes we can” back.
3. Getting to Know Your Ukulele (2 mins)
Test all the children’s knowledge of all the parts learnt so far. Sometimes point to a part and ask them to name it and sometimes say the name of a part and ask them to show you where it is on their ukuleles. Do this mostly with the whole group at once. However, you can sometimes call on volunteers to answer on their own as well.
4. Finger Dexterity (3 mins): ‘Dinosaur Fingers’ written by Lucy Milan Davis “It’s time to do our dinosaur fingers!” Please see instructions in lesson plan 1.
5. Tuning (5 mins): ‘The Tuning Song’ written by Lucy Milan Davis NB: Before the lesson make sure your C string is out of tune.
Remind the children how to hold their ukuleles. See activity 5 ‘Tuning’ from lesson plan 1 for instructions.
Play a G with your tuning fork and ask the children to hum the note they heard. Then, ask everyone to pluck the G strings on their ukuleles with their thumbs and then hum the note they
