P. 43

NB: when demonstrating slower and faster tempos, make sure not to adjust the volume of your singing. Sometimes teachers tend to sing slowly and quietly at the same time (for example) and so their students start to think that slow and quiet have the same meaning.
9. Strumming the Ukulele (6 mins): ‘Pease Pudding Hot’, ‘Bell Horses’ & ‘See Saw Up and
Down’ (traditional)
Remind the children how to hold their ukuleles. See activity 5 ‘Tuning’ from lesson plan 1 for instructions. Please also take a look at the strumming instructions under activity 9 ‘Strumming the Ukulele’ in lesson 1.
“Can anyone remember the name of the chord we use to strum ‘Pease Pudding Hot’ (F)?”
Show the children how to finger an F chord on their ukuleles (finger 1 on 1st fret of 2nd string, finger 2 on 2nd fret of 4th string). Get the children to take their fingers off the fretboard and finger the chord again several times. Remind them to place the left thumb at the back of the neck centre between first and second frets each time.
Everyone sings ‘Pease Pudding Hot’ and strums an F chord in time with the pulse.
Then, half the children sing and strum whilst the other half sing and perform the actions and sounds during the rests. Switch.
Next, choose two volunteers to perform together in a duet. One child sings and strums whilst the other sings and performs the sounds and actions during the rests. Repeat (choosing a different pair each time) until every child has had a turn of either strumming or doing the sounds and actions.
“For homework this week I’d like you to practice singing and strumming ‘Pease Pudding Hot’.”
“Can anyone remember which songs we strum using the C chord (‘Bell Horses’ and ‘See Saw Up and Down’)?” Lead the children in singing and strumming ‘Bell Horses’ and then ‘See Saw Up and Down’ using the C chord.
10. Let of Steam! (5 mins): ‘Banana Splits’ written by Ana Sanderson
Make sure that everyone is standing up. Tell the children that you’re going to say a silly chant and you want them to try and copy the actions as best they can. You say the chant and perform the actions as suggested by the words. Click here to see the video.
Bananas, bananas, clap, clap, clap, Bananas, bananas, flap, flap, flap, Bananas, bananas, click, click, click, Bananas, bananas, flick, flick, flick, Bananas, bananas, bump, bump, bump, Bananas, bananas, jump, jump, jump!
Repeat until the children are familiar with the words and actions.
Next, say the action words in your thinking voices (so leave out the action words and chant
“bananas, bananas” followed by the action only). Click here to see the video. 11. Singalong Time (4 mins):
Please see instructions in lesson plan 1.
