8. Song/Game (6 mins): ‘Change the Tune’
Tell the children that you want them to listen carefully because you are going to sing ‘See Saw’ but you are going to change the tune. You sing the song in an ascending major scale.
“Did I start with a higher or lower pitch (lower)? Which direction did the tune go (up/higher)?”
Tell the children that you want them to take out their musical pencils and draw the new tune as you sing it again. Before you begin, remind the children that it starts low so they should hold their pencils down low. Sing the new tune as the children draw with their musical pencils. Make sure to begin with “ready” to remind the children where the song starts.
Sing the new tune again and draw a vertical line (from bottom to top) as you do so. Make sure to add an arrow head to the top.
Tell the children to listen carefully because you are going to change the tune again. Sing the song in a descending major scale.
“Did I start with a higher or lower pitch (higher)? Which direction did the tune go (down/lower)?”
Sing the new descending tune again (remembering to start with “ready”) as the children draw it with their musical pencils.
Sing the new descending tune again and draw a vertical line (from top to bottom) as you do so. Make sure to add an arrow head to the bottom.
Tell the children you’re going to sing one final tune. Sing the song all on the same note at a middle pitch.
“What did you notice (voice stayed the same/tune stayed on the same pitch)?” Sing the new tune as the children draw it with their musical pencils.
Sing the new tune again, drawing a horizontal line (from left to right) as you do so. Add an arrow head to the end of the line.
Tell the children that you are going to play a game called ‘Change the Tune’. When they give a correct answer they get a point and when they give an incorrect answer you get a point. You sing one of the three tunes but you don’t tell the children which. They must draw the tune in the air with their musical pencils and then guess which arrow on the board matches the sung tune. Repeat
