several times, sometimes changing the tune and sometimes singing the same tune twice in a row to try and catch them out. Add up the points at the end to see who is the winner (you or the children)!
9. Strumming the Ukulele (7 mins): ‘Pease Pudding Hot’ (traditional)
Remind the children how to hold their ukuleles. See activity 5 ‘Tuning’ from lesson plan 1 for instructions. Please also take a look at the strumming instructions under activity 9 ‘Strumming the Ukulele’ in lesson 1.
Remind the children how to finger an F chord on their ukuleles (finger 1 on 1st fret of 2nd string, finger 2 on 2nd fret of 4th string). Everyone sings ‘Pease Pudding Hot’ and strums an F chord in time with the pulse. Repeat.
Next, ask the children to sing the song and tap the bodies of their ukuleles during the rests.
Remind the children how to finger a C chord (finger 3 on 3rd fret of 1st string). Then everyone sings the song and strums a C chord during the rests only.
Next, divide the class into two. Half strum an F chord in time with the pulse and half strum a C chord during the rests only (at the same time). Repeat and then switch (so that everyone has a turn of playing each part two times in a row).
If there is time, ask volunteer duets to perform as above (with one child strumming an F chord in time with the pulse and the other strumming a C chord during the rests only).
10. Let of Steam! (4 mins): ‘Banana Splits’ written by Ana Sanderson
Everyone says the chant and performs the actions as suggested by the words. Repeat.
Bananas, bananas, clap, clap, clap, Bananas, bananas, flap, flap, flap, Bananas, bananas, click, click, click, Bananas, bananas, flick, flick, flick, Bananas, bananas, bump, bump, bump, Bananas, bananas, jump, jump, jump!
Then everyone performs the whole chant out loud but backwards. E.g.
Clap, clap, clap, bananas, bananas, Flap, flap, flap, bananas, bananas...
Divide the class into two. Half perform the original chant and half perform it backwards (at the same time). Repeat and then switch (so that everyone has a turn of performing each way two times in a row).
