judge the Zuchtschaus. By now the NATC has six hunting judges and o ers a variety of DTK tests.
NATC kennels fulfill all the requirements of a DTK kennel in Germany, from breeding require- ments such as Formwert at a Zuchtschau, temperament test, DNA testing and litter inspections. NATC members use their Teckel predominately for tracking wounded game, hunting woodchucks and falconry. Most Teckel are used for tracking wounded game and NATC members have been very active advancing blood tracking and have been instrumental in changing laws in some of the U.S. States where it was previously illegal to track wounded game. Other States are still working on changing their laws.. The blood tracking community is extremely successful and gaining more and more popularity.
Hunting groundhogs, racoons, foxes etc. is mostly a way to control vermin on agricultural lands. The season for groundhogs is spring to fall and since the groundhogs (Marmota monax), dig vast
dens with small tunnels and holes, Kaninchen- and Zwergteckel are used to locate them under- ground, hold and bay them while the hunters dig down to them. Then standard Teckel are used to pull the groundhogs out.
Small Teckel are also gaining in popularity with falconers. They use Teckel to flush out cottontail rabbits from dense brush, holes and other inaccessible locations to the birds. The teamwork be- tween these birds and the dogs is amazing to watch.
And while the NATC was founded by hunters and dog sport enthusiasts, it turned out that espe- cially DTK longhair Kaninchen and Zwerg Teckel have a large and growing fan base in North Amer- ica.
With membership all over the United States and Canada, our events move around and have been taking place in Ontario and Quebec in Canada and along the East Coast and in the Mid-West of the United States. Plans are in the works for events in the Southern and Western United States as well as Western Canada.
Since the NATC event took place in Canada last year, the next event will be in June of this year in Pennsylvania, USA.
The event will o er Gun Shyness Tests, Water Test, Blood Tracking Test (20 hours), BHP 1, BHP 3 and of course a Zuchtschau (conformation show) as well as a mandatory JGHV judging seminar for our NATC hunting judges. You will find more details in the event announcement.
