l) Near (see Note 1) manual release controls provided to release electronically
                          locked doors as recommended in BS 7273-4.

               NOTE 1 For the purpose of this sub clause, “near” is normally considered to be within 2m
               measured horizontally.
               NOTE 2 For the purpose of this sub clause, “at” means that the emergency luminaire would

               illuminate in both directions at the change of direction or intersection.

               Emergency lighting should be provided so that each room (Open area) and escape route
               has visible light from at least two emergency luminaries.
               It must also be installed in areas where there is a lack of ambient or secondary lighting and

               the failure of normal lighting through loss of power would reduce relevant lux levels below
               those recommended within the standard, including:

                   a)  All toilet facilities provided for those with a disability;
                   b)  Any area >8m2 should be treated as an open area;
                   c)  Multiple closet facilities without borrowed light;

                   d)  Plant rooms, generator rooms, control rooms and switch rooms;
                   e) Adjacent to main control equipment associated with the provision of normal and
                       emergency lighting to the building;

                   f)  Evacuation lift cars;

               Lights to be either integrated ceiling grid lighting, stand-alone bulk head units, batten or

               pendant lighting units. The use of twin spot floodlights should be avoided internally as direct
               spot lights can cause disability glare.
               All emergency lighting must be installed with suitable testing facilities.

               A competent and qualified electrical contractor must be employed to design, install, test and
               commission the system.
