EASEL News: Fall 2021

older dogs, since maybe they don’t need to go out as frequently.”
The hardest part for Caroline, though, is saying goodbye to the pups she has come to know and love.
“They are all hard to let go,” Caroline says. “I’ve had some come in very young, and I worked with them to potty train them. You
worry about the dogs because you want them to go to the right home. I put a lot of time and energy into this because I want to. I
want these dogs to have the best home. I’m just an avid animal lover; whatever I can do with these animals to find the right home, I
     want to do.”
Just prior to Covid-19, she began working with Sandra (Weinberger) to do reference checks. But she also does fostering of both
cats and dogs – most recently fostering her first pregnant cat who came from a hoarding case.
The experience was very different for her, but it ended in success. The night that the cat gave birth in her home, Caroline suspected
it was time for her to deliver based on her behavior. She stayed up late, until about 1 or 2 a.m. with the mother cat. Finally, she fell
asleep, and around 5 a.m., she found that the cat had given birth.
“I said, ‘Oh my gosh, she did it, and they are all healthy!’” Caroline recalls. “They were all great; they did really well, and all were
     adopted.”
Three of the dogs she fostered even up finding their forever homes right with Caroline. The first was a foster named Lucy, and
Caroline was fostering back-to-back animals because she was spending more time at home. Lucy was the runt of the litter and had a
snappy attitude. But her daughter fell in love with her.
“She can be tough, but I am so glad we kept her,” Caroline says.
She also adopted a German Shepherd female two years ago, and most recently, adopted a pit mix named Toby (formerly Clemson).
Now, her goal is to focus on what the shelter dogs need and getting them adopted and to continue to support the shelter in any
way she can – and “not to adopt any more animals. It’s hard, but when you see them go to a good home, all that hard work pays off.”
She is grateful to have worked with so many volunteers at the shelter whose passion is evident. “The support and care that Georgia,
Kim, Mark, Abby and everyone at the shelter has for these animals is amazing,” she says. “Sandra, who works with the adult dogs and
with training is key to the shelter’s success.”
