AWARDS
JAMES GILLILAND TROPHY
The disabled Aviation Association of South Africa nominated Mike Lomberg for the James Gilliland most
meritorious feat over the past year. Simon Smith (above) collected the award on behalf of Mike Lomberg’s
family. The award celebrated the life of Mike, a pilot and paraplegic from Cape Town, who in November 2018
embarked on a humanitarian mission to fly around the world with Handiflight, a Swiss based disability flying
organisation. The mission was to engage with communities in the countries they visited creating disability
awareness and inspiring the disabled. By all accounts the mission was a fantastic success, where communities
were transformed. Mike himself was deeply humbled by the enthusiasm and motivation of the people he met.
Unfortunately Mike died in a crash on December 30, 2018 leading the Handiflight team while landing in Thailand.
