Christmas Dreams
Kevin Wong
On the cold night of Christmas Eve, a young girl peered through the window
of a cake shop, nose pressed up against the glass. With her every breath
clouding upon the pane. In her hand, she clutched a scrunched up bill. It had
been entrusted to her by her mother, the only bit of money that she could
spare a er an en re month's worth of hard work at the factory.
The girl’s eyes lingered longingly on the cakes before sliding down to inspect
the price cards. She gave a small gasp when she realized that could afford
the smallest cake with a ny bit of change to spare and quickly peeled her‐
self from the window to join the queue. But wai ng in line, her mind began
to wander to her family and how her mother’s hands had shaken when
she’d given her the money.
