AS I REMEMBER

My beginnings go back to Wollo Province, Yeju district, Gubalafto sub-district and the Fame! locale where
my parents attended the Orthodox church. Illiterate farmers, they did not understand the value of education for their children. When I got old enough to care for our cattle, the wonder of God's world around me inspired in my heart a
longing for knowledge.
I enrolled in the local church school and studied all
the books they offered including some which delved into
mysteries of the Trinity and other matters. When the church
gave me a book rewarding faithful attendance, 1 learned for the first time about the three divisions of Christianity into
Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant. This troubled me. "Which of these three came first and which is the true church? When did Christianity begin?" I asked, but the religious teachers could not answer. I studied Geez and poetry seeking knowledge and finally came to Addis Ababa
