One of these false gods \\as named Hermes. In Greek mythology, Hermes was the son of another false god, named Zeus. \.ccording to the Greeks, Hermes was a very swift and fast messenger who had a special talent. Hermes could interpret his father Zeus and was selected to be an interpreter and messenger to humans. \Xlhenever Zeus wanted to tell the ancient Greeks
something, he would send Hermes to make the message plain.
The word hermeneutics is a form of the word "Hennes". Actually, "hermeneutics" is just a big word that describes the set of rnles that we use for interpreting the written word of God. The short definition of "hermeneutics" is "the science of biblical interpretation". One final note about "Hermes" and the 01-igin of hermeneutics: The Greeks called him "Hermes", the Romans also believed in him, but they called him "Mercury" (Ivfercmius). The Bible itself e,~en verifies this fact when you cornpare the King
James and the Amplified versions of Acts 14:11-12:
Acts 14:11-12 (KingJames Version)
And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech ofLycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness ofmen. And they called Barnabas,Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chiefspeaker.
