that angels many times assist God in His work. Nevertheless, this is not to say that they possess any knowledge of which they can be proud, nor do they have the ability to carry out any divine work of themselves.
Genesis 28:10-17 records Jacob's dream in which he saw angels descending to the earth and ascending to heaven. They were serving God. On another occasion, Jacob found himself wrestling with an angel all night, desiring a blessing. The angel finally pronounced, "Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast
prevailed" (Genesis 32:28). We realize from the angel's words that he came in the name of God. Hence Jacob said that He saw God face to face (Gen.32:30). Hosea 12:4 says that this appear ance of God to Jacob was by an angelic form.
It was again through an angel that God first appeared to Moses (Exodus 3:2). When Moses came to Horeb, the mountain of God, the angel of the. Lord appeared to him in a flaming fire out of the midst of a bush. Of such an angel God said in Ekbdus 23:20-21, "Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him."
