If we find evidence of life on

          another planet, it won't tell

us whether it is populated by

          sentient city-builders or

          mindless green slime. To find

          like-minded people, it is

          more trustworthy to hunt for

          compounds that can only be

          produced by advanced

          civilizations.

          The notion that humans are

          the center of the universe

will suffer a severe setback if

          we do establish contact with

          alien life. But how much
more exciting would it be to

learn that there is a great

galactic tree of life, of which

          we are but a branch?
