After Orlean and Isherwell attempted to recover the comet’s materials fails, they

plan to leave with a group of elite Americans, to escape on a spaceship intended to

locate the closest planet with an atmosphere similar to Earth. Before departing,

Orlean offers Randall a seat on the ship, but he declines, opting to spend his final

hours with Kate, his family, Yule, and Dr. Oglethorpe.

When the time is approaching the final moment, Randall and his family, Kate and

Yule, and Dr. Oglethorpe are at the dinner table eating their expected last supper

together, and bidding farewell to one another with fear and satisfaction. Then the

expected happened, the comet finally hit the planet, killing everyone.
