Founded on July 16, 1790, Washington, DC is unique among American cities because it was established
by the Constitution of the United States to serve as the nation’s capital. President George Washington
chose the exact site to build the nation’s capital along the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. To design the
city, he appointed Pierre Charles L’Enfant, who presented a vision for a bold, modern city featuring grand
boulevards (now the streets named for states) and ceremonial spaces reminiscent of Versailles.

Washington, DC was nearly destroyed during the War of 1812. Enemy forces (the British) invaded the city
and burned much of it to the ground, including the newly completed White House, the Capitol and the
Library of Congress (including all of its books). Thomas Jefferson later replenished the library’s collection
by selling off his entire library. As the city rebuilt, so did many of the monuments and memorials that we
                  treasure today.

The Washington Monument, Smithsonian Institution and Arlington National Cemetery are just a few
of the iconic sites to see when visiting Washington, DC. The Arlington National Cemetery is unique as
it actually lies directly across the Potomac River, in Virginia. More than 240,000 service members and
their dependents are buried there. This land was originally donated by Virginia to the United States
government to form part of the nation’s capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land southwest of the
Potomac River and the General Assembly of Virginia changed the county’s name to Arlington.
Due to the county’s proximity to downtown Washington, DC, Arlington is the headquarters for many
departments and agencies of the United States government, including the Department of Defense
(DoD), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Similar contributions from counties surrounding
Washington, DC has broadened the nation’s capital into a complex and layered area, with a distinctive
character. Today, you can have the best of both worlds by delving into the nation’s past or adventuring
into the adjacent exciting new neighborhoods.
