Accepting different
ways of working:
a fresh approach to
managing stock in 2024
By Caroline Pond
Sometimes, we persist in our familiar work patterns simply because
it’s what we’ve always done. Fact.
But WHY do we do this? Let’s think about it.
It’s often easier to stick with the familiar rather than embracing new approaches,
even if those new methods could ultimately bring substantial benefits. I
understand the apprehension. When we’re already swamped with work, the
prospect of overhauling our entire way of doing things can seem daunting. So,
instead of making changes, we maintain the status quo.
However, there is a time of year when we seem to be more receptive to embracing
change and that is in the New Year. For some reason December 31 seems to
st
represent a full-stop in a timeline and January 1 is the start of something new.

With that in mind I want you to think about how you might
introduce new ways of working in the dispensary this New Year.
To do that we need to accept there could be improvements
in current dispensary processes which will enhance efficiency
if we’re willing to consider them. Take managing dispensary
stock, for example. I frequently encounter excessive amounts
of stock in dispensaries, and when I inquire about it, the
answer often boils down to “that’s how we’ve always done it.”
If we were to go back 20 or 30 years I could appreciate
where the need for holding dispensary stock in a time
when deliveries might be less than daily, but to still be
working that way is just outdated in my opinion.
