I understand that there will always be a fear of an
order not arriving and you not having stock to fill your
prescriptions but in my experience, it matters not how
much stock you hold you will never have everything to
fill you daily prescriptions and all you end up with is a
massive number of owings. Better not to start dispensing
prescriptions you can’t fill than to double handle
everything and your 3 day turnaround should allow for this
type of disruption to the dispensing process.
If you really can’t make the full transition to no stock,
then I would urge you not to just discard the whole idea. I
always believe a compromise is better than nothing. You
could implement bulk orders for fast-moving items while
reaping the benefits of this new approach to holding stock.
In some cases this can improve efficiency, especially if you
are very busy dispensary, however this mustn’t become
a free for all or your stock levels will just creep up again.
Identify your top 20 items and how many you use weekly,
then establish a standing order for a weekly bulk purchase.
I challenge you to cease ordering stock today,
clear your shelves, and order only what you need
for the current prescriptions. This way of working
makes perfect sense, and it’s straightforward to
implement. Sometimes, less really is more!
