VAT and Personally
Administered Items (PAIs)
By Caroline Pond
The questions in my in-box around PAIs never
seem to go away, and it’s not surprising really as
the whole personally administered item scenario
in a dispensing practice is a bit of a riddle.
However, misunderstanding can lead you to lose
a considerable amount in unclaimed VAT and, in
this instance your accountant might not always
be as clued up as you would like to think.
Please read on and question your team as to how
you are managing PAIs. Just because someone
has been ‘doing the job for donkeys’ years’
doesn’t mean it is being done right; trust me here
– I have been to many practices where the whole
concept of PAIs is hit and miss, usually with the
practice at a financial loss as a consequence.
I’m going to try to keep this article really simple,
around VAT, so it will allow you to question the
process in your practice. In-fact I am going to
start with the answer to managing PAIs in the
simplest terms and then go on to explain the
reason for the way I am advising you to manage
these in your practice.
