The Drug Tariff – Category M
By Caroline Pond
Lots of talk whilst I am writing this article, regarding
the uplift in the Retained Margin (Category M) for
community pharmacy, but of course any alteration
to the reimbursement rates for generics listed in the
Drug Tariff will affect you all as Dispensing Doctors
as we all use the same Drug Tariff.
The community pharmacy sector will receive
£3.073bn in core CPCF funding in 2025/26. Of the
annual sum, £900m is to be delivered as retained
buying margin i.e. the profit pharmacies can earn on
dispensing drugs through cost effective purchasing.
The £900m retained margin element
is a target that the Department of
Health and Social Care (DHSC)
aim to deliver by adjusting the
reimbursement prices of drugs
in Category M of the Drug
Tariff. The delivery of
margin to pharmacy is
carefully monitored by
Community Pharmacy
England and the
DHSC.
