which continues to make machines for the electrostatic coating of glass. Gordon was brought
up in West Bromwich but lived in Tividale from 1960. He was an active member of Dudley Round
Table club and its Chairman 1966/67.
521 Anthony Barrie TOWNSEND (1932-2018) (Inducted 8.6.1987; President
1992-93; made a Paul Harris Fellow 2007; left 30.6.2009 on moving to
Portugal.) On joining the club his classification was Security Services and
his firm United Crest Limited of Cradley Heath. After a year this was
changed to Engineering. He was Proprietor and Director of Barrie
Townsend Ltd trading as Acegoal Fabrications, industrial stainless steel
fabricators, with an engineering works in Cradley Heath, then latterly in
Netherton. He formed the company in 1980 but shut it down in 1995 when
he retired. He was born in Abergavenny, proud of his Welsh heritage, and
fond of singing (especially Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’!). He married in Dudley in 1967 and lived in
the Kingswinford area from then until he emigrated to Portugal. He was made a Paul Harris
Fellow for his untiring work over many years as chairman of the club’s Community Service
committee.
522 Raymond (‘Ray’) James BOWLES (1939- ) (Inducted 6.7.1987; left in 1988/89.) Architecture.
Senior Partner of architects and planners Alan Young & Partners, Parsons
Street, Dudley. He started working for Alan Young as a 15-year-old while
still attending Dudley Grammar School. In 1991 the practice merged with
a London-based firm to form Bowles Whittick Young, and moved to offices
in Dixon’s Green, Dudley and in Willenhall. It was later renamed The
Whittick Young Partnership. Ray was also a director of Bromley
Developments (Dudley) Limited from 1991 until it was wound up in 2012,
and a prominent member of Dudley Golf Club. He lives in Oakham Road,
Dudley.
523 Derrick James GROVE (1938- ) (Inducted 6.7.1987; left in 1995/96.)
Finance, commercial banking. Manager of the branch of Lloyds Bank at
Halesowen Road, Netherton from about 1982 until taking early retirement
in 1995. He moved soon afterwards to Praa Sands near Penzance,
Cornwall, then moved again in 2007 just a few miles to Stithney, Helston,
where his son Carl owns a bistro restaurant. His wife Sylvia died three
years later but he subsequently married Barbara Priestley, a member of
the Rotary Club of Cober Valley Helston. Derrick grew up in Sheldon,
Birmingham and started his working career in the Birmingham area. He
appears to have moved home to Stourbridge before coming to Dudley.
524 Roger Michael EMERY (1948- ) (Inducted 18.7.1988; President 1997-98; resigned June 2020.)
Metal fabrications. Director of R Glazzard (Dudley) Ltd, Netherton. He
joined what was then Glazzard (Iron and Steel) Ltd (a subsidiary of D Wilson
Construction Group Ltd) in April 1984 as Commercial Manager. Eight
months later he and Ray Glazzard (member #448) bought out the ‘iron and
steel’ company and incorporated as R Glazzard (Dudley) Ltd, with Ray as
Managing Director and Roger as Financial Director and Company Secretary.
On Ray’s retirement in 1998 Roger became Managing Director and senior
partner in Glazzard (Dudley) Ltd and Emery and Glazzard Ltd until June
2006 when he himself retired and sold his interest in both companies to
Ray’s son Andrew Glazzard (member #558).
