founded by his father William and uncle Thomas, both members of the Rotary club for many
years from 1926 (members #114 & #115). He lived at Holly Hall but soon after the business
                  closed he retired to Hagley.

1950-58. He grew up in Derby and joined what was then the London City &
Midland Bank as a junior clerk directly from school at age 16. He enlisted
in the Public School Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers and saw active service
for three years during the First World War with the Royal West Kent
Regiment, being mentioned in despatches and promoted to Lieutenant. He
returned to the Derby bank. In 1926 he was appointed accountant of the
Midland Bank at Northampton, then in 1930 was promoted to an inspector
of branches, based in Leicester. From Leicester he came to Dudley, his last banking post. During
the Second World War, as Lieutenant-Colonel Michie, he commanded the 40th Staffordshire
(Rowley Regis) Battalion of the Home Guard. He retired to Keyworth in Nottinghamshire.

210 David Crichton TEMPLE, MA (1900-1966) (Elected ~11.1937; resigned 30.1.1939.) Education
(Secondary). Headmaster of Dudley Grammar School from 1934 to 1962
after which he retired to Ludlow but continued teaching part time. Born
and raised in Maryhill, Glasgow, he was educated at Glasgow Academy and
Shrewsbury School. He won a scholarship at Sidney Sussex College,
Cambridge where he gained the English Tripos in 1921, the History Tripos
and BA in 1923, and MA in 1926. He was assistant master at Uppingham
School from 1923, then warden at ‘Shrewsbury House’, Liverpool (a youth
and community centre attached to St Peter's Church in Everton and closely
associated with Shrewsbury School) from 1927. From 1930 he was an
assistant master at Christ’s Hospital boys’ school, Horsham (where pupils still wear a Tudor-style
uniform consisting of a long blue coat and high yellow socks) before coming to Dudley.
David Temple was more than a little eccentric. At Dudley he would swim in the school’s
unheated outdoor pool every Christmas morning and at other times was often seen on the top
diving board stark naked. In later years he was also rather unkempt so he was known to pupils
as Mr T Ramp ... tramp. After the Old Dudleians masonic lodge was founded in 1948 for former
pupils of the grammar school, David Temple was the first Initiate. He became Worshipful Master
in 1960 and remained a strong supporter until his death. He was also actively involved with
Dudley Harriers & Athletic Club, becoming its President in 1953, and with Dudley Parish Church.
