The Mines campus is compact and very walkable. Most of academic buildings
                                                       events and casual use. The central pedestrian avenue is the closed portion
                                                         of Maple Street between 14th and 19th streets. This area is brick paved
                                                 are clustered together in a 4 x 3 block section at the center of campus.
                                                    Buildings are sited to create courtyards of open spaces for structured

                                                               and permanently closed to all traffic. Not only does this pathway connect  academic buildings, but it also links the southern campus housing to the  Student Recreation Center and the Student Center creating a central  pedestrian axis for the campus. Several other portions of through streets have  been closed creating a serene sense of a community without vehicles. The two shared blocks of 16th Street, east of Illinois Stree
