Lent discipline 55
The man replied: ‘Ever since I was young I have lived in this way.’
When Jesus heard this, he said to him: ‘There is still one more thing you must do –
live so that nothing you do depletes the Earth’s resources or does permanent
damage to its habitat.’ But when the man heard this he was sad because he had a
comfortable life.
Jesus saw that he was sad and said: ‘It is easier for a waste collection vehicle to
enter the drive of a small council house, than for a rich man to live sustainably.’

Chip fat fuels lorries
A Norfolk haulage company runs its 45 lorries on bio-diesel and has not only saved
thousands of pounds on fuel, but has been awarded contracts because of this envi-
ronmentally friendly policy. It can do this because UCO (used cooking oil) collected
from local supermarkets, restaurants and chip shops is processed by Global
Commodities into ‘driveECO bio-diesel’. The Customs and Excise, checking the
lorries’ emissions, said, ‘The smoke coming from these exhaust systems is cleaner
than the air we breathe.’ Global Commodities, the UK’s first and largest manufac-
turer of bio-diesel, began when a grandchild of the Norfolk entrepreneur Dennis
Thouless said, ‘Granddad, I think you’ve taken a lot out of this world. I think it’s
time you put something back in.’
