Resonance of Clear Soul and Innocent Formative Beauty
Han-Sol Gwon’s painting delivers the plentiful sensitivity and delicacy. His work is to mark dots one
by one on the canvas by using a magic pen or to create a form with the soft lines and affluent colors.
The artists drawing pictures by marking dots on the canvas generally use oil painting or India ink.
And there are some artists who do this kind of work in order to resolve the psychological sickness or
stress.
However, Han-Sol Gwon’s painting is very different from this kind of painting. His painting has
a lucid and clear character even though it begins with soft lines and gentle colors. His painting is
outstandingly clear and vivid enough for us to feel the resonance of clear soul. His painting is so
far from the obscurity of colors and the touch of lines drawn uncertainly in the mood of sorrow and
melancholy.
In other words, his painting is not random touches he imprints without thought in order to soothe
the sickness in his heart but a beautiful shape unfolded with expressive power after he sets up the
composition and the shape he intends to express. Maybe because of these reasons, his paintings are
so calm, clear and bright that they give the appreciators aesthetic curiosity about picture and great
communion about the formativeness which is composed of compositive colors and shapes along with
simplicity.
‘Waiting’, one of his representative paintings is a painting of simple pointillism and it shows un-
usual neatness. This painting describes a cat which is looking at the distant sky. This cat sits alone
in the nature in which the fragrance of flowers and grass seems to come forth softly and subside on
the earth along the spring breeze. Even thought the shape is a cat, his excellent expressiveness is
displayed in its figure which seems to be a metaphor for woman.
This painting provokes appreciators’ interest and concern by bringing out a feminine cat as a meta-
phor for dignified woman waiting for man. This painting composed of many kinds of flowers around a
cat and appropriate image of leaves seems to frankly display inner mind of the artist.
In this reason, the emotion and the artistic value of this artist seem to be very special, bright and
plentiful. And his painting is a precocious and innocent picture containing delicacy in it and makes
our attention stay on the picture because of its modernity and formative beauty implying our emo-
tion.
In the poor current situation of Korean art which can not help following the globalization trend in-
creasingly, his painting in which we can feel Korean emotion gives us consolation. The posterior view
of a cat watching the front is not just an image of animal without any thought. The expressive power
of thoughtful artist can be seen in the personified cat’s image.
Furthermore, sometimes his profound and plentiful colors or monotonous colors composed of only
white and black which are frequently used in Oriental painting make his painting more humane and
more familiar by adding the weight to the formative beauty.
In Han-Sol Gwon’s painting, dream and hope are harmonized with the future-oriented bright-
ness and richness as if they are one heart. His painting has the shadow of hope and richness that
give power to the life in which emptiness and loneliness overlap. So his painting seems to contain
love. Like this, secret monologue composed of beautiful love is far from self-display or insistence.
This monologue sublimated into the affluent form, especially the most beautiful shape of love in the
painting.
Therefore the artist spreads out a series of his paintings centering around the concept ‘Richness and
Love’. It is distinct that the process in which an image is made through the arrangement of lines and
dots and also the image symbolizes the illusion of ‘color and dot becoming love’ is an excellent motif
which can create the image of painting more profoundly.
It is thought that he puts emphasis on the extensity and temporality on the basis of purity and he
has been concerned about the ‘fabrication’ and ‘extinction’ of life with the heart of love. Especially he
receives attention because he develops purity on the basis of Korean emotion and seems to commune
with nature.
Meanwhile, unconsciously communing with our traditionality through his innocent inner world,
he has silently painted by softly reflecting his inner world on the white paper. In this point of view,
innocent aesthetic formative sense related with the trace of love for life inherent in Han-Sol Gwon’s
paintings can be said as the communion with the unconscious world.
I think that the illusionary images he creates in this communion are another living things heading
for different world over the new border. It is distinct that this artist who silently fills the fictional
life with clearness and love and also constantly unfolds the beautiful colors by drawing repeatedly
today tastes emotional pleasure through the various colors and shapes.
This artist who has his own remarkable screen organizing power and decoration sensibility is open-
ing a new formative road for ‘affluence of love’ through his own peculiar imaginative power.
