Ramakrishna Paramahansa: 1.
Spirituality automatically leads to humility. When a flower
develops into a fruit, the petals drop off on its own. When one becomes spiritual, the ego
vanishes gradually on its own. A tree laden with fruits always bends low. Humility is a sign of
greatness. 2. It is on account of the ego that one is not able to see God. In front of the door of
God's mansion lies the stump of ego. One cannot enter the mansion without jumping over the
stump. 3. The ego is like the root of a banyan tree, you think you have removed it all then one
fine morning you see a sprout flourishing again. 4. ’The cow cries „Hamba‟ which means
„I‟. That is why it suffers so much. It is yoked to the plough and made to work in rain and
sun. Then it may be killed by the butcher. From its hide shoes are made, and also drums,
which are mercilessly beaten. Still it does not escape suffering. At last strings are made out of
its entrails for the bows used in carding cotton. Then it no longer says, ’Hamba! Hamba!’, ’I!
I!’, but ’Tuhu! Tuhu!’, Thou! Thou!’ Only then are its troubles over.
Manache Shlok by Saint Ramadasa 139: Though self-evident, and pervades all existence, Unfortunate is the one, who only matter sees and not his own ignorance. For want of faith worthy deeds turn sour, The wealth of eternal truth lies hidden from the ego’s heady power.
