Triclosan​: The most Popular Concern For Toothpaste?
​T​riclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal agent present
in some consumer products, including toothpaste, soaps, detergents, toys, and surgical cleaning treatments. ​Triclosan is a banned ingredient that first originated in hand soaps but later continued in toothpaste. Triclosan is said to help kill the bacteria in the gums of your mouth. But there are also plenty of negative effects that banned Triclosan in the first place. From FDA issues final rule on safety and effectiveness of antibacterial soaps​,​“ ​The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today issued a final rule establishing that over-the-counter (OTC) consumer antiseptic wash products containing certain active ingredients can no longer be marketed.” They banned the use of Triclosan in products because of the fact that Triclosan targets both bad and good bacteria in your mouth. Colgate Total is a brand that was made especially with Triclosan and is said to prevent the germs of gingivitis to grow and ruin your gums. This is proven to be true but it doesn’t entirely prove Triclosan is safe.
​T​riclosan isn't even an essential ingredient in many
products. Triclosan added to toothpaste has been shown to help prevent gingivitis. However, there’s not enough evidence that hand washes and body washes with Triclosan are more effective than regular soap and water. Health experts are saying that the use of Triclosan could potentially lead to the development of an antibiotic-resistant germ. This problem
