The total scale in FCCERS consists of 38 items. The main aim of the rating scale is to measure the global quality of care that is provided in an individualÂs home for a small group of children. Amongst others, the rating scale can be used as an instrument for self-evaluation among the providers, for monitoring by licensing agencies, for training purposes technical assistance, and for research and evaluation.
The FCCERS contains items "to assess provisions in the environment for a wide age range, and to ensure protection of childrenÂs health and safety, appropriate stimulation through language and activities, and warm, supportive interaction" (Harms, Cryer, & Clifford, 2007, p.1). The scale focuses on the conditions that the authors have identified as being important for promoting childrenÂs positive outcomes.
