5.4.1 How FCCERS Addresses Diversity

FCCERS addresses diversity in the following methods:
(a) Item 1 (indoor space used for child care) focuses on whether the space is accessible to children and adults with disabilities;
(b) Item 4 (arrangement of indoor space for child care) assesses the accessibility of spaces for children with disabilities;
(c) Item 15 (using books) assesses if there is a wide selection of books accessible that reflect different races, ages and abilities;
(d) Item 18 (music and movement) assesses music from diverse cultures with various mother tongues articulated by the children;.
(e) Item 20 (dramatic play) assesses whether the props such as toys like dolls or figurines are representative of the various cultures and abilities;
(f) Item 24 (promoting acceptance of diversity) assesses whether there is a positive potrayal of the different races, ages, gender and abilities in the materials and activities;
(g) Item 26 (active physical play) assesses whether materials and equipment for active play are suitable for children with disabilities; and
(h) Item 34 (provisions for children with disabilities) focuses on whether there are necessary modifications made in the learning environment to allow children with disabilities to participate fully and be integrated into the group. This item also examines if the family child care provider interacts with parents and specialists to plan for meeting the childÂs needs.
