118 TOPIC 7 SETTING UP THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
know the price range of the furniture to manage the allocated budget
appropriately to ensure that the purchasing is cost-effective.
(f) Material
Furniture may be made of vinyl, leather, wood, plastic, and metal, among others. Deciding on the make of the furniture is important so that the furniture can be used for the right purpose. Educators may ask for samples from vendors to ensure that the make of the furniture suits the purpose it is intended for. Ensure that the furniture is made from non-toxic materials and preferably from natural materials.
(g) Size
A table that is meant for adults is not suitable for young children. When planning for furniture for the learning centre, think of the appropriate size of furniture needed for children.
(h) V endor
Selecting the right vendors to supply the furniture is also important. Vendors that have local sales representatives may offer better service. Additionally, certain vendors may provide better assistance in aspects of payments, replacements and refunds. Ask these vendors about discounts when purchasing the furniture. Ask for samples. Choosing the right furniture will contribute towards childrenÊs positive behaviour and assist children in their learning (Sadler, 2007).

ACTIVITY 7.2
You are planning to open a new classroom for an early childhood learning centre. This room is for children aged four to five years. Discuss in groups and come up with a plan to purchase the furniture for the room. What are the factors that need to be considered?
ROOM ARRANGEMENT AND SPACE
The kind of environment in a young childrenÊs learning centre and the way it looks are important to a young childÊs learning because they influence the childÊs behaviour. An environment that is comfortable, attractive, safe and cosy will contribute towards childrenÊs excitement to come to the learning centre to learn and play with their friends (Nutbrown and Clough, 2014). The question is; how should a classroom be arranged to cause young children to feel comfortable? How should the space be used?
