120  TOPIC 7 SETTING UP THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
7.3
ACTIVITY 7.3
In groups, discuss the importance of outdoor space as a childrenÊs learning environment. Discuss the different types of games and activities that students can do at the outdoor space area and the appropriate space needed.
STORAGE AND DISPLAYS
Planning for storage and display at a young childrenÊs learning centre is also important. Educators must have a systematic plan on how equipment and materials are stored and displayed, not only to instil positive values but also to contribute towards a conducive learning environment.
7.3.1 Storage and Display Considerations
The following are important factors to consider when planning for storage and display:
(a) Open Storage
Open storage is refers to areas that allow students to see the material and equipment available. These material and equipment are those that are in active use either most of the times or are currently being used. Open storage promotes accessibility to the users.
(b) Closed storage
Closed storage is storage for equipment and materials that may not be in use. They are securely and neatly kept, such as office supplies, cooking utensils, or cleaning fluids. Designating and labelling these items in \secure locations help maintain inventory and ensure childrenÊs safety.
(c) Personal storage
Child learners need spaces to store personal belongings such as stationery, toys, books and papers. Children keep their belongings in designated personal storage spaces so that they can access them when needed. Having personal storage also contributes to a sense of belonging among the child learners. As they come to school every day, they will see their name at the personal storage area and understand that his/her being in the classroom is recognised.
