ACTIVITY 7.4
In groups, produce a model of a classroom that integrates good practice of room arrangements and space. Present this to the class and ask for feedback.
7.4 PLAY PROVISIONS AND EQUIPMENT
Planning play provisions and equipment demands that educators have a good understanding of the need for and purpose of the young childrenÊs learning centre. This is important since children naturally like to play and having the right equipment will ensure that children are happy and that learning can take place in a fun environment. There are factors that help educators to plan for play provisions and equipment similar to the discussions in the previous sections. For example, it is important for educators to ensure that all equipment and materials used in the learning centre for childrenÊs play are well maintained and clean. Play equipment should be sufficient based on the number of children at the centre and the types of activities that will be carried out. Additionally, play equipment should be appropriate for the purpose it is intended to ensure that the young childrenÊs learning environment is stimulating and challenging (Robinson & Jones Diaz, 2005).
Play equipment should be of suitable design and condition. It should conform to appropriate safety standards depending on childrenÊs ages and stages of development. Providing play equipment that is based on the childrenÊs ages and sizes allows them to play together comfortably. Providing equipment for play activities is not an easy task. Educators must do regular checks for defects and faults, and repair or replace them as necessary.
Play materials in the classroom are extremely important for multiple developmental perspectives such as cognitive, social/emotional, physical, and language. Educators need to ensure age-appropriate play material/equipment is available in the classroom.
