TOPIC 7 SETTING UP THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT 
123
When planning provisions for play and the necessary equipment, the following questions may be used as guidelines:
(a) How should the space be arranged?
(b) Is it used for indoor or outdoor purposes or both?
(c) Who will be using the equipment?
(d) How should the equipment be organised?
(e) Is there enough space for play?
(f) Are there marked areas for play?
Again, other questions can be added to the list above based on the context and the complexity of the situation. Educators may want to do research prior to providing the right play provisions and equipment for the children, on aspects such as space, environment, target group of children, duration of activities, number of young children for each activity and the right environment (Nutbrown and Clough, 2014).
ACTIVITY 7.5
Discuss with your group members and produce an extensive list of questions that can be used as guidelines when planning for play provisions and equipment.
• Asking „Why-How‰ questions helps provide a clear guideline and understanding when furnishing a young childrenÊs learning centre.
• Furnishing of a learning centre must take into consideration the safety, durability, purpose, quality, price, size, vendor, quality and make of the furniture.
• A young childrenÊs learning environment exerts a strong influence on childrenÊs behaviour.
• A conducive learning environment should be comfortable, attractive, safe, cosy, have multiple usage and proper lighting.
