TOPIC 1 CREATING QUALITY EARLY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Young children need the appropriate environment to maximise their potential in all areas. However, what makes the environment shape young childrenÊs behaviour into learning? Environment set up with experience in how young children learn and develop can positively support learning. This environment includes developmental physical space, materials, and interaction among young children and teachers who promote and encourage active construction of knowledge. In this topic, our discussion on quality environment will be focused on the importance of, and indicators of quality early childhood setting environment and appropriate materials that are suitable for learning. Quality environment is one of the most important aspects of early childhood education. Thus creating a quality early childhood environment will be the main discussion in this topic.
1.1 THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY ENVIRONMENT
Before we discuss further, let us take a look at the definition of environment from the perspective of early childhood. What does environment mean in early childhood settings?
In early childhood education we use environment to describe the surroundings, location and situation of places where learning takes place. The term environment also describes play spaces where young children feel welcomed and trusted. For young children, a quality leaning environment may mean being accepted for what they are no matter what their background and ability. It provides a sense of belonging and this sense will remain with these children throughout their life. If adults or teachers can provide a safe and supportive learning environment, young children will be able to respond naturally through exploration and communication. From an early age, children strive to understand their environment to make learning happen.
Why is quality environment so important? In early childhood setting, quality environment is important because it provides a meaningful experience that affects how young children develop and learn. A healthy environment as a second teacher enhances childrenÊs positive development towards learning. An inviting environment supports all aspects of childrenÊs domains, including cognitive, social, emotional, physical and emotional development. Therefore, it is
