40 TOPIC 3 PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT FOR INFANTS AND TODDLERS
activities. This enriched space adapts to the needs of the children by including discrete areas for nurturing, exploring, eating, playing, toileting and diapering. These are further explained below.
(a) Nurturing Space
This space has a comfortable space area where an adult or caregiver can sit on the floor and hold an infant or a toddler. An adult-sized sofa or a soft mat can be placed on the floor of this space. Pillows can be placed against the wall to support the adultÊs back while holding an infant or toddler. Chairs for toddlers or nursery rocking chairs should feature plenty of padding to provide a comfortable and soothing experience. Soft and washable materials are not only comfortable, they are also easy to clean.
(b) Sensory Space
Toddlers naturally love playing with sand and water. This space usually has short tables for toddlers actively involved with sensory materials or toys displayed in an inviting manner. Water and sand play not only support a toddlerÊs sensory development, they are also excellent media for exploration and discovery. Sand or water play helps toddlers to increase their small body muscle movements and hand-eye coordination skills. The use of simple items such as plastic animals, funnels, rubber ducks, cups, and small pails can help them to develop these skills.
(c) Manipulative Space
This space provides toddlers with first-hand experience through manipulative toys and items. It normally has low shelves or tables with toys and is carefully arranged so that toddlers can reach them. Toddlers can improve their motor skills and learn to work with their peers while playing in this space. Toys that change in shape, ring towers, stacking blocks, dolls, large beads for stringing and puzzles are interesting materials that help toddlers to develop their fine motor and hand-eye coordination skills. Materials such as blocks provide opportunities for toddlers to explore their creativity by building unique structures. Sometimes, toddlers may want to play with manipulate materials while sitting on the floor. Thus, soft, clean carpet or thick blanket is an appropriate material to be used in this area.
(d) Space for Socialisation
This is a space where infants and toddlers can engage in simple activities or play with each other. It provides infants and toddlers many opportunities to learn from others and become functioning members of a social group. Fun activities such as singing, clapping and body movements help them to strengthen their social skills. Games such as rolling and kicking balls are a great way to practise their motor skills.
